TARGET ISI 2013 (AFTERNOON) 21st AUGUST Sunday, CLASS PREVIEW

We are currently working on Number Theory and Coordinate Geometry. On 21st August, the TARGET ISI 2013  session will be something like this:

  1. 1:30 PM - Class begins with a 15 minutes test on Number Theory and Coordinate Geometry. It will cover whatever we learnt in the previous classes
  2. 1:45 PM - The first section on coordinate geometry will resume. We will continue with the Analytical Geometry - 1 Sheet. This section will run for 1 hour 15 minutes. We hope to cover much of straight lines.
  3. 3:00 PM - We will have a break of 10 minutes. This week we again have the HAVE A BREAK pamphlet. We also have fresh coffee.
  4. 3:15 PM - The second section on Number theory begins. Apart from discussing the Number Theory - 1 in detail we want to introduce the Chinese Remainder Theorem in this class. This section will also run for 1 hour 15 minutes.
  5. 4:30 PM - The Effect Test begins (and it will run for 15 minutes).
  6. 4:45 PM - Class concludes, students submit homework copies, take back corrected ones.

EARLY BIRD (MORNING) 21st AUGUST Sunday, CLASS PREVIEW

We are currently working our way through number theory and geometry. We had brief experience of combinatorics in June.
On 21st August, the early bird olympiad batch will be something like this:
  1. 10:15 AM - Class begins with a 15 minutes test on Number Theory and Geometry. It will cover whatever we learnt in the previous classes. For example it will consist of preliminary divisibility problems, geometry problems related to straight lines and parallel lines.
  2. 10:30 AM - The first section on geometry will resume. We will continue with the Geometry - 1 Sheet. We will also introduce the problem set from Excursion in mathematics. This section will run for 1 hour.
  3. 11:30 AM - We will have a break of 10 minutes. This week we again have the HAVE A BREAK pamphlet. We also have fresh coffee.

ISI 2012 batch - 17th July Sunday, Evening ; CLASS PREVIEW

We are in mid-July. We have completed the first diagnostic test (I.S.I. B.Math level). We are about to commence the most serious journey through high school mathematics. At this juncture the 17th July class becomes relevant.

The main topics due are:
  1. B.Math 2009 last five problems discussion.
  2. RMO 1996 concluding part
  3. M.L.Khanna Problem Set 63 concluding part
  4. Geometry Sheet 1 concluding part
Apart from the above discussion we will have the the DIAGNOSIS TEST and the EFFECT TEST as usual. The "HAVE A BREAK" refresher is also ready to roll.
We have less than 300 days left (about 290 days). What should be our strategy?
By end august (that is in 6 more classes) we should be through with Integral Calculus in it's entirety. Also in 6 classes we will cover the Geometry portion (as far as math olympiads can take us).
September and October will be devoted to Differential Calculus. In the olympiad frontier we will master number theory and combinatorics.
November and December will be devoted to Binomial Theorem, Complex Number, Infinite Series. In the olympiad arena we will face inequality and functional equations (we have RMO in December).
January and February will be devoted to Trigonometry and Coordinate Geometry alone. Olympiad related topics will be suspended (except for those who will crack RMO in December).
March will see Theory of Quadratic Equations in full action. Apart from that we may take up some residual topics. We will enter revision exercises.

  3. Passage 64 -67 from M.L.Khanna - 25 problems.
  4. Geometry sheet 2
We will have diagnosis test and effect test.

CHEENTA CALCULUS COURSE


(this course is a part of Cheenta Ganit Kendra's I.S.I. entrance preparation program, but it is also available as a standalone course)
  • Prerequisite: Trigonometry, Algebra, Coordinate Geometry
  • Books: M.L.Khanna's IIT Mathematics, Maron, Tarasov, Apostle, Piscunov
  • Duration:
    • Ground Work - 5 classes
    • Differential Calculus - 10 classes
    • Integral Calculus - 10 classes
  • Course Structure
    • The course consists of rigorous and thorough problem solving from M.L.Khanna's IIT Mathematics book (Passage 45 to 73 of 2012 edition). We spend 20 classes (or about 40 hours) on these 28 passages.
    • I.S.I. centric concept building and relevant problem solving is pursued in 5 classes (or 10 hours). In these classes we walk through the excellent works of Tarasov, Maron, Apostle, Piscunov

13th to 19th June 2011 - a summary of classes at Cheenta

Some of these classes are over. Some of them are about to come. Wondering how to use them? Follow the following easy steps:
  1. If the class has already been conducted, and you wish were present, do not worry. You can always request for a specific class. On the basis of your request we will come back with the session once more as soon as possible.
  2. A class is coming up and you want to attend it. But you are worried, 'I am not a regular student of that batch, will I be allowed?'. Feel free to request permission to attend the session. If the seats are not already filled up, we will happily allow your entry.
14th June (Tuesday) and 16th June (Thursday) - LIMIT, CONTINUITY CONCEPT SESSIONS

Special discussion seminar on Limit and Continuity. The sessions were designed to train students appearing for interview in I.S.I. Naturally the sessions were very interesting. We covered many hitherto less discussed topics like Bolzano Weierstrass Theorem, Axioms of Real Numbers (including Completeness Axiom), Cauchy's definition of limit of a sequence and function, idea of continuity, intermediate value theorem etc. Saikat cracked B.Math and I.M.A entrance this year. Along with him, a new entrant Megha experienced the sessions. The students and the faculty were thrilled by the depth of the classroom discussion. We have decided to put the session in the upcoming Cheenta journal on Advanced Precollege Mathematics (we have named it 'Leelavati')

17th June, Friday, INEQUALITY + TRIGONOMETRY (1st session)

We will discuss the basic mean-power inequality, introduce Bernoulli Inequality and also the intuitive idea of Xeno's paradox. The Trigonometry portion will define the 'angle' (but everybody knows that isn't it!). We will also go into the first layer of properties of triangle. RMO 1990 and IMO 1959 will also be under scanner

18th June Saturday, JUNIOR OLYMPIAD GEOMETRY SESSION

This is for the students of class 5-6. But even the experienced geometer of high school may benefit from the class. We will continue working on some of the constructions of geometrical figures pointing out ways to prove them analytically.

19th June Sunday (morning), JUNIOR OLYMPIAD GEOMETRY 2ND LAYER

This is for students of 7-8. Definitely advanced students of lower classes will also benefit from the class. We will face a marathon test for the first time. The syllabus is till 31st Theorem of Euclid (volume I). The students from higher classes are advised to take the test.

19th June Sunday (Afternoon), SENIOR SESSION (Class XI) on INEQUALITIES AND TRIGONOMETRY

This session is designed to achieve certain height in Inequalities. We work on Problem sheet 2 (covering Bernoulli, Cauchy Schwarz, Rearrangement and more). In Trigonometry we troubleshoot and solve till Problem set 33 of M.L. Khanna IIT Mathematics. We also work on RMO 1991.

19th June Sunday (Evening), SENIOR SESSION (Class XII) on GEOMETRY AND CALCULUS

We start off with the remaining portion of RMO 1995. Then we switch over to Geometry (Euclid School Geometry). We cover atleast till Theorem 22. Homework will be Riders from Challenges and Thrills of Pre College Mathematics. Calculus portion will experience two apparently different things. We reintroduce integration as a limit of a sum and discuss some problem solving techniques from M.L. Khanna. We also initiate discussion on Limit of a sequence.

15th May 2011 class preview

On 15th May 2011 (Sunday) we focus on inequalities once more. We have already covered Problem Sheet 1 and Problem Sheet 2 on inequalities which covered the Little Mathematical Library booklet on inequalities. Problem Sheet 3 will conclude the LML book and assist a migration to the Arthur Engel- Problem Solving Strategies collection on inequalities.
  • Diagnosis Test (covering Problem Sheet 1 and 2 on inequalities)
  • Problem Set 3 (on inequalities) with a marathon revision of previous two sheets.
  • Regional Mathematics Olympiad 1993 paper discussion
  • International Math Olympiad 1959 paper discussion
  • Effect Test (covering Problem Sheet 3 with special stress on Holder's inequality)
IMO and RMO related discussion will need prior preparation in the part of the student.In fact that is of the homework of current week. This class is open to all. Students from class 9 to 12 may attend it. Practice Problems for next week includes 100 problems from Arthur Engel inequalities, Inequality chapter from Excursion in Math, Challenges and Thrills of Precollege Math, Mathematical Circles (especially triangular inequalities) and IMO, INMO, RMO level inequality problem collection.

In May will have 3-4 classes (since it is summer vacation in most schools), which are open to all. We want to complete Functional Equation (the book by Venkatchala, and problem collection in Arthur Engel). We enter June to work on Combinatorics and Geometry.

In December the Regional Math Olympiad is due. Summer Vacation is really the prime time for preparation. Look out for more updates in this blog.
